ConnectED

User Experience Design for Remote Learning Platform
Project Overview
Project Duration: May 1 - 5, 2023
Designed in: Figma
Client: ConnectED

(Product remains in Development Stages)
The Product

ConnectED is a blended learning platform offering an innovative, comprehensive, and cost-effective solution to bridge the education gap in Africa.
The Problem

Many students in Africa lack access to a high quality education.

ConnectED was looking for knowledge on how to design a remote learning platform that will be useful for both teachers and students.
The Goal

Design the user experience for key user dashboards that are accessible, data-driven, and personalized.

My Role

User Experience Designer for key dashboards in collaboration with UI designer.
My Responsibilities
  • Apply my knowledge of UX design and education to determine the key factors that should be included in both the teacher and student dashboards in order to maximize learning.
  • Create wireframes for the dashboards focused on personalized learning analytics.
  • Provide feedback on the existing screens created by the UI Designer.
Scope & Constraints

Scope
UX Consult - Key features for Dashboards

Time
5 Days to complete

Financial
Limited budget of $200 for wireframes & feedback
UX Research
First, I conducted a competitive audit and compiled collection of successful e-learning platform screens, noting key features to include for maximal student success. A couple examples of the platforms and features can be seen below.

Wireframes
Next, I created wireframes of the teacher & student dashboards, noting the key features that should be included, such class name and a visual representation of how many students are passing and failing the class
Teacher Dashboard - Courses Overview
Picture

For the student dashboard, it is important that the students can quickly see which assignments are due & have a visual representation of their grade, so that they can quickly notice if their grade drops. The color coding, highlights whether or not a student is passing or on the brink of failing, allowing user to quickly understand their status.

Next, I created wireframes for the class view from both the student and teacher perspectives.

Individual Class: Teacher View

Key features to access at a glance:

  • How class is doing as a whole
  • Individualized student data
  • Topics students are struggling with most
  • Allow teachers to filter insights by unit, assignment, and topic.

Individual Class: Student View

Key features to access at a glance:

  • Current/Past due assignments
  • Course Grade - Color coding remains consistent with dashboard (Green - passing, yellow - near not passing, red - failing)
  • Helpful Resources - provided in multiple modalities for accessibility purposes (eg. videos, readings, podcasts, practice tests, games, etc.)

Outcomes, Next Steps & Takeaways
Deliverables
Competitive Analysis insights shared with client
  • Feedback on current screens shared with client
  • Four wireframes completed, two teacher views & two student views
Next Steps
Given more time and financial resources, I would have liked to:
  • Build in more gamification features to motivate students and build out more screens to further develop the user flow
  • Conduct more user research into accessibility features for learning platforms
  • Build a low-fidelity prototype & conduct usability testing
Takeaways
I gained a better understanding of the primary needs and expectations of both teachers and students in a remote learning environment.
  • Given the constraints, I learned how to manage expectations, communicate progress, and address concerns effectively as a UX designer.
  • Through collaborating with the design team, I improved my documentation skills through conveying competitive research as well as expressing my design process.
  • Working within these constraints sharpened my adaptability skills, as I had to adjust my design approach and priorities based on the project's limitations.

Thank you for exploring this project!
